Midtown Miscreant speaks out about a local group called Veronica's Voice. It's objective is to  end prostitution....

Well, MM is not so sure that that is what the prostitutes really want

snip:

At the end of the day, we all live with the choices we make. You can't preach, threaten or cajole someone in to not doing something they have set their minds to doing. Is it sad that there are women out there who have put a price on their dignity and self worth, yeah it's tragic. And it's equally tragic when we see some wino passed out on a corner, or some kid throw their life away by committing a murder, or.... you get my drift, life is full of tragic stories, and when you really dig down and look at the core of the story, you will find that most people do what they do, because they want to. Think I'm being harsh? Next time you see a hooker on troost or the Avenue, ask her if she wants a job, a real job, waiting tables or whatever, then roll your window up before you get hit in the head with a round heeled shoe.

Decide for yourself.. warning this is MM were talking about.. He does not pull any  punches

I agree with him about the hookers. Let them do what they want or what they are good at. After all; what would all the ugly men with a little cash do if they did not provide their services? I don't want them prowling around the schools eyeing little girls with bad intent. (Jethro Tull)

Personally, I am glad that there are groups out there trying to help people with problems but the issue of prostitution has more to do with the social/individual problems that drive some women into it. Whenever a teenage girl runs away from home, she often does not have the resources/age to get gainful employment legitimately. Then there are the ones who have a drug addiction and end up using one of the few resources they have to get enough money to both supply thier addiction and other needs. Next are the ones who work a legit job, but who have a sick child/parent/partner and end up doing a few "dates" every week to make the ends meet. Then there are the aspiring actresses/models/singers who can't get enough work in the field, so they turn a few tricks. Then you have some who have a lazy mean partner who forces them into it with the threat of physical abuse (the old "Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde" pimp). Is prostitution a victimless crime; far from it, and unfortunately the biggest victim is the prostitue.

The only thing that MM didn't say was Veronica's Voice march was equivalent to them performing a sex act! (He was down on them because THEY ARE CHARGING for people to participate in an "awareness" march!) I've got to agree with him on that one!

Its Women who drive the market! I mean if the kitty was easier to get without spending time, money or endangering a marriage; then there would not be men desperate enough to pay for it with cash. After all no matter what the situation is with someone who actually walks the street; if women were not selling it then no one could Buy it.
Women own half of all the stuff in the world but 100% of all the kitt kat. Market forces at work here folks!

Legalize prostitution as it has been done in Nevada.

It seems to me the street BLEEP's could never compete with a big hore (misspelled on purpose) house - and it would be taxed, regulated, zoned, etc.

Although I can't say that with certainty since I've never been to a part of nevada where it's legal.

Who knows, but fighting these types of crimes is a huge waste of time and taxmoney.

Original Trucker-
1. When a teen runs away.. what she didnt want to follow her parents rule? She was being abused? took off with her boyfriend? All things with other answers other than selling your body, except to unruly teens.

2.Drug addicted women would rather continue to use their body instead of get clean and lead a clean life with a regular 9-5. That is a little more than they ever want to do.

3.A few dates every week to make ends meet? Gimmee a break they are the same ones that get their hair done every week, manicures, pedicures.. and where is dad.. he should be contributing to making ends meet too. If not there are government handouts that I just love whatching part of my paycheck disappear to.
4.Then you have some who have a lazy mean partner who forces them into it with the threat of physical abuse (the old "Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde" pimp

Do you have ANY idea how many organizations there are to hide and secure a new life for these kind of women?

All of these women choose to prostitute, because it is too hard to got the legal route.. Well for all those that work their arse off day in and day out without selling out.... I am sick of the excuses.

They want a quick answer, fix... well the rest of us have to work work work to afford it legally.

Exactly Searching, they want to go the easy route! But the problem is, for many of them, it is an endless cycle; run short, hit the streets, turn a few "tricks" and get whatever it is they need. Get caught, go to jail, get no assitance in turning things around (just a fine or a short jail term), back on the streets and the same old, same old.

"Social services out there available for ..." Evidently you haven't stepped foot into some of the social service offices out there; "fill out this form, provide this documentation, and wait for us to get to your file. If everything is in order you'll hear from us in 2 to 3 weeks/months. If it isn't, you'll hear from us requesting more information," and if we screw things up just figure you'll be denied and put onto a "bum" list and be denied any future applications for about a year. As far as dead beat daddies, just remember, if you don't know who "daddy" is or he has split the scene and is nowhere to be found all you can do is go on the government dole, which puts you at the bottom of the list for assistance/coverage. (Then there are the daddies who are in prison, they don't pay anything on support to start with.) And as far as the ones that are known and who are providing assistance, well guess what, you can only force them to come up with whatever you and the courts have reached in agreement with them to provide. (If all you wanted was $200 per month, or that was all he was financially able to provide, that is all your going to get.) As far as the runaways, its a two way street! If some parents weren't so hard on thier

kids, some of them wouldn't be hitting the streets, and if others were more proactive some of them wouldn't be gone either. The biggest problem for parent's is figuring out which way to go. Too many teens today have that "you can't treat me like that" attitude, and there aren't enough parents willing to say, "go ahead, make your bed and sleep in it. I'm done writing the checks to pay for you and your mistakes." Then you couple into that all of the "street smart" kids out there, who think dropping out of school, pot, crack, meth and the thug life are going to get them somewhere in life. Then when they realize that it isn't, it's too late for them. They've got three or four kids, by just as many daddies, a hundred dollar a day pot and booze addiction, welfare apartment, EBT card, AFDC monthly check, an application pending for SSI (mental problems due to alcoholism/drug addiction/laziness) for themselves, and applications for each of the kids (ADD/ADHD due to mom's alcohol/drug use during pregnancy). So they go on the stroll, again and again and again, to get that money for the drugs and booze that numbs the pain of the failure they've become. The wasted life they now lead, and the probable disasters the lives of thier children will be. So they lower themselves to having sex with nameless, sometimes dangerous men in order to make that buck!

One thing that MM didn't mention about Veronica's Voice, and other similar groups, is that they enable these prostitutes. Channel 9 did one story, awhile back, about one of the activists with that organization. This woman was actually on the street handing out condoms to working prostitutes! DUH! "We are here to help you get out of this life, but here, take a handful so you won't catch/spread an STD." Talk about your messed up "community activists"! If your going to get someone out of prostitution, why are you enabling them? That would be like the folks from AA standing out in front of a liquor store and handing out half pints, or some from NA handing out needles at a "shooting gallery"! I understand that you are not going to get someone to quit something until they are ready to do so, but if you've ever lived with someone who has a problem you learn that the first step towards making them get help is not to enable them, the next is to let them know you are not willing to tolerate thier behavior, and the third is to give them the option of quitting or facing the consequences (on thier own, and with out your help).

Oh, and as far as the "Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde" pimp/partner, in most of these cases the women have undergone a series of beatings/make ups, and other mind and relationship controls which has caused them to become brain washed. They are in the same situation as the women who are in abusive relationships and who keep on going back to thier abuser or refuse to press charges against them; they believe that thier partner "loves" them, and is a really "good" person and that they "deserve" punishment for whatever transgressions they have done or that thier partner "will never" beat them again. These are the women we read about who end up dead because thier partner beat them to death, even after the police had intervened several times in the past, and the abuser might have done some jail time, but they couldn't get themselves to leave thier abuser. Do the organizations help them? They are most certainly out there, and do help many women, but the truth is, if the victim of abuse doesn't want to take the help, or has deluded themselves about the intentions and character of thier abuser then these organizations will never see them or they might show up, and then disappear on them.

Choices. It's all about choices. We all make them. Prostitution is one of the oldest professions in the world. It goes waaaaaay back to biblical times. Why do they do it? Because they want to! Do I believe in prostitution? No way. I have more self respect than that. Those women will look old beyond their years in no time. Sad.
